Departing from Varenna: the piers

Tours board at the Imbarcadero of Varenna on Riva Grande, right beside the ferry dock and the famous Passeggiata degli Innamorati — the lovers' walkway suspended over the water between the village and the landing. What you see from the water

The first five minutes are pure cinema: Varenna's ochre and rust-coloured houses stacked above the tiny harbour, then the cypress avenue of Villa Monastero stretching along the shore, and the ruined tower of the Castello di Vezio watching from the hill above. Crossing the strait, Bellagio fills the horizon with the gardens of Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni's promontory behind it. Longer tours round into the western branch for Villa del Balbianello — arriving by water, as its explorer owner Guido Monzino always did — and continue past the Grand Hotel Tremezzo to Villa Carlotta. The three-hour route adds the island of Comacina and the Orrido di Nesso, where a mountain stream dives under a 2,000-year-old bridge straight into the lake.

Why Varenna is the smart base

Logistics first: direct trains from Milano Centrale reach Varenna-Esino in about 65 minutes, no changes — while Bellagio requires a ferry or bus on top. The ferry dock next to the tour pier connects you to Bellagio and Menaggio every 20–30 minutes, so a boat tour slots perfectly into a day of village-hopping. Varenna is also noticeably quieter than Bellagio in high summer: same views, half the queues, and dinner on the waterfront at a fraction of the price.
