Where tours depart in the Tremezzina

The main landing is the Tremezzo imbarcadero on Via Regina, directly in front of Villa Carlotta's gates and next to the ferry dock. Skippers also collect guests from the private piers of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo and the lakeside hotels of Bolvedro, and from Lenno — the departure point of choice for Balbianello-focused tours, since the villa's promontory is a five-minute cruise across the bay. The villa coast from the water

Villa Carlotta announces itself from the lake before you ever see the gate: seventeen acres of botanical garden — azalea terraces, citrus tunnels, centuries-old cedars — rising straight from the promenade. Ten minutes south, the wooded point of Villa del Balbianello juts into the lake, its twin-towered loggia balanced over the water; this is where Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Casino Royale were filmed, and the only truly complete view of it is from a boat, drifting twenty metres off the rocks where explorer Guido Monzino used to land. Across the bay sits Isola Comacina, the lake's only island, once a fortified town destroyed by Como in 1169 and now a scattering of artists' houses and a famous restaurant. Northbound, the boat crosses the strait to Bellagio and Varenna for the classic golden-triangle panorama.

Pairing the boat with the villas

Our most-booked combination: 10:00 boat tour while the light is soft and the water flat, 11:30 timed entry to Villa del Balbianello (the gardens reopen after the morning quiet; book entry ahead in high season), lunch in Lenno's little square, then Villa Carlotta in the afternoon when the tour groups thin out. Skippers can drop you at Lenno's pier directly below Balbianello's water gate — the way visitors arrived for two centuries — and collect you afterwards. In one unhurried day you cover the two greatest gardens in Lombardy and the lake itself.

Practical notes

• Staying at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo or another Tremezzina hotel? Ask for pier pickup — it is usually free and it is how the lake was meant to be used.
• Balbianello is closed most Mondays and Wednesdays; the boat view runs daily regardless.
• Morning departures get the smoothest water and the best photography light on the loggia.
• The C10 bus (Como–Menaggio) stops at the Tremezzo pier; ferries connect to Bellagio and Varenna all day.
