Boat Tours from Bellagio

The Pearl of the Lake is the perfect departure point: Villas Melzi and Balbianello, the golden triangle and the Orrido di Nesso, all within a one-hour cruise of the Bellagio piers.

Bellagio sits at the exact hinge of Lake Como's three branches, which makes it the most strategic departure point on the whole lake: within one hour on the water you can reach Villa del Balbianello, Varenna, the Comacina island and the Nesso waterfall — the four images everyone associates with Lake Como.

Where tours depart in Bellagio

Private tours board at the main boat landing on Lungo Lario Manzoni, a two-minute walk from Piazza Mazzini and the famous Salita Serbelloni steps. If you are staying in the historic centre, you will reach your skipper on foot in minutes. Guests arriving by ferry from Varenna or Menaggio step off one boat and straight onto another — the car ferry dock and the tour piers are 100 metres apart. Some operators also pick up at San Giovanni and Pescallo, the tiny fishing bay on the Bellagio promontory's quieter side.

What you see from the water

Leaving the pier, the boat first passes the waterfront gardens of Villa Melzi — the lakeside azaleas and the Moorish temple are far better seen from the water than from the gate. Crossing to the Tremezzo shore you get the postcard view back: Bellagio's pastel staircase-streets climbing the hill with the Alps behind. Then comes Villa del Balbianello, its loggia jutting over the water on the Lenno promontory — the single most photographed spot on the lake, and reachable in comfort only by boat. Longer tours continue to Isola Comacina, the Orrido di Nesso waterfall plunging under its medieval bridge, and the shoreline of Varenna with Villa Monastero's cypresses.

Getting to Bellagio

Bellagio has no train station — part of its charm. The mid-lake ferry shuttles constantly between Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio (crossing time 15 minutes); from Como town, the direct fast boat takes about 45–60 minutes, the bus around 70. If you are coming from Milan, the simplest route is train to Varenna-Esino (about 1h05 from Milano Centrale), then the 15-minute ferry. Tell us how you are arriving and we will time your tour to meet the ferry.

Local tips from our skippers

  • Book the first morning slot in high season: flat water, empty bays, and the light on Balbianello is at its best before 10:00.
  • Combine a morning tour with lunch at Pescallo or aperitivo on the rooftops above Piazza Mazzini.
  • In September the water is warmest and the tour boats are far less crowded — the same route, half the company.
  • If you stay in Varenna or Menaggio, you do not need to base yourself in Bellagio: tours pick up on all three shores.

Frequently asked questions

Can I join a shared tour from Bellagio instead of a private boat?

Yes. Shared tours of about 75 minutes run several times a day in season at €40–55 per person. They are a great budget option, but private tours from €285 per boat are often better value for groups of four or more.

Where exactly is the departure pier?

The main landing is on Lungo Lario Manzoni in central Bellagio, by the ferry dock. Your skipper sends you the exact spot and a photo on WhatsApp before the tour — you cannot miss it.

Can the tour pick us up in Varenna or Menaggio instead?

Yes. Most skippers based in Bellagio will collect you from the Varenna or Menaggio piers at no extra cost for tours of 2 hours or more — the crossing is part of the experience.

Is one hour enough from Bellagio?

One hour covers Villa Melzi, the Tremezzo coast and the Balbianello viewpoint comfortably. For Isola Comacina, the Nesso waterfall or a swim stop, choose two or three hours.

Ready to plan your day on the lake?
