You will remember Lake Como forever — but your phone camera will not do it justice. A photoshoot with a local professional is how the trip actually survives: real light, real composition, and someone who knows exactly which alley in Bellagio glows at 7 a.m. and which pier in Varenna is empty at sunset.
What a Lake Como photoshoot is
A private session of one to two hours with a professional photographer who lives and works on the lake. You walk, you talk, you stop where the light is good — the photographer guides poses when you want direction and disappears into candids when you do not. It is not a stiff studio affair transplanted outdoors: it is a stroll through the most photogenic shoreline in Europe with someone whose entire job is making you look like you belong in the frame. Sessions are deliberately small and personal — couples most of all, but also families, solo travellers, and groups of friends celebrating something.
Who books it
Couples and honeymooners are the heart of it: two hours across Varenna's waterfront and a quiet garden, and you come home with the album the wedding photographer could not have taken. Engagements are the fastest-growing request — newly-engaged couples who want the announcement photos to be unmistakably Lake Como. Proposals are a speciality of their own: the photographer hides, the moment happens, and it is captured properly — if that is your plan, our marriage proposal by boat package combines the two, or the photographer can join a private tour. Families book the morning mini-sessions: one hour, patient direction, children allowed to be children, and finally a holiday photo where everyone is in the picture.

The locations, honestly ranked by light
Bellagio at dawn is the masterpiece: the Salita Serbelloni steps empty, soft light down the alleys, the lakefront before the ferries start — worth the early alarm, every photographer on the lake will tell you the same. Varenna is the most versatile: the lovers' walkway over the water, the pastel harbour, and the gardens of Villa Monastero for green backdrops. Villa del Balbianello is the grand stage — cypresses, the loggia, the promontory — best reached by boat and best paired with a water session. Castello di Vezio, above Varenna, gives the aerial panorama: the whole golden triangle below you, no drone required. And Como's lakefront — Villa Olmo's gardens, the Tempio Voltiano, the seaplane harbour — suits city-side stays and rainy-day backup plans with its covered porticoes.
When: light rules everything
The season runs April to October. Two windows matter: early morning (roughly 7:00–9:30 in summer) — empty villages, flat light, zero crowds in the background; and golden hour before sunset — warm, cinematic, the light that makes Lake Como look like Lake Como. Midday sessions exist but we will honestly advise against them in summer: harsh shadows and forty tourists in every frame. September is the photographers' favourite month — golden light arrives earlier, the villages breathe again, and the lake goes glassy.
What to wear and bring
Keep it simple and light: solid colours beat patterns, cream/white/soft pastels or navy photograph beautifully against the lake's blues, and comfortable shoes matter because the best spots involve cobbles and steps. Bring a second outfit for 2-hour sessions (the photographers know where you can change), a light layer for evening shoots, and water in summer. Avoid logos, avoid matching outfits for the whole family (coordinated, not identical), and skip the hat unless it is genuinely photogenic — it shades faces at exactly the wrong angle. If the session is a surprise proposal, wear what you would normally wear on a nice evening out: the cover story only works if nothing looks staged.
Tell us your date, how many of you there are, and whether you have a location preference — we will match you with the photographer whose style fits, confirm availability at the good-light hour, and send an exact quote in one WhatsApp exchange.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if it rains?
Light rain is workable — covered porticoes in Como and Bellagio's arcades make atmospheric backdrops, and moody skies photograph beautifully. For genuinely bad weather, photographers reschedule free of charge to another day of your stay, or refund if no day works.
What should we wear?
Solid, light colours — cream, white, pastels, navy — photograph best against the lake. Comfortable shoes for cobbles and steps, a second outfit for the 2-hour session, and no large logos. Coordinated rather than identical outfits for families.
How many photos do we actually get, and when?
Around 30 professionally edited photos from a 1-hour mini session, around 60 from a 2-hour full session, delivered via a private online gallery within 5–7 days. Full-resolution downloads and print rights are included — no watermarks, no upsells.
How far ahead should we book?
Golden-hour slots are one-per-photographer-per-day, so July–August needs 2–3 weeks' notice; spring and autumn usually 1 week. Proposal packages need more — the planning is half the service — ideally 3–4 weeks.
Can we combine the photoshoot with a boat tour?
Yes, and it is our favourite combination: the photographer boards your private boat tour and shoots you on the water with the villas behind you, then continues on shore. Combined packages run €840–950 depending on duration — ask us and we coordinate both.
