Boat Tours from Menaggio

The elegant western promenade with the best view of the golden triangle: depart from Menaggio and Bellagio is fifteen unhurried minutes across the water.

From €285 per boatPier: central MenaggioBest sunset viewsApril–October

Menaggio is the western shore's answer to Bellagio: a graceful 19th-century resort town with a long flower-lined promenade, a proper piazza for your pre-tour espresso — and a front-row seat on the golden triangle. Locals will tell you the view from Menaggio beats the view of it.

Where you board in Menaggio

Tours depart from the Menaggio imbarcadero on Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, the town's lakeside square — impossible to miss, two minutes on foot from anywhere in the centre. The car and passenger ferries from Varenna and Bellagio dock at the same landing, so combining a crossing with a private tour is seamless. Guests staying up the hill in Loveno or along the golf-course road can be collected at the smaller Nobbiallo pier by arrangement.

What you see from the water

Menaggio's promenade was built for the view: directly across the strait, Bellagio steps down its headland between the lake's two southern branches, and to the right Varenna's painted houses glow in the afternoon sun. From the boat you finally see what the postcard-sellers know — this is the single widest, most complete panorama on the lake. South of town, the shore slips past the cypress gardens of Villa Mylius Vigoni and the beaches of Loveno before the villas of the Tremezzina begin: Villa Carlotta with its terraced azaleas, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and then the wooded finger of Villa del Balbianello pushing into the water. On three-hour tours skippers continue to Isola Comacina for a swim in the lee of the island, where the water is calmest in the afternoon.

Menaggio as a base

Menaggio suits travellers who want lake life without the Bellagio price tag: excellent hotels at gentler rates, a lido for swimming days, and a ferry every 30 minutes to both Varenna and Bellagio. It is also the gateway to the Val Menaggio and the Lugano road, so a boat tour pairs naturally with a morning in the mountains or an afternoon round at the historic Menaggio & Cadenabbia golf club. Families like it because the promenade is flat, the gelato is serious, and the boat pier is never more than a gelato-lick away.

When to go and what to know

  • Evening is Menaggio's secret weapon: west-facing, it catches the last light long after Bellagio falls into shade — the sunset aperitif cruise from this pier is our most re-booked tour.
  • Friday is market day on the lakefront; arrive early for parking and combine it with a late-morning tour.
  • Coming from Lugano or Milan via Como, the C10/C20 buses stop at the ferry square, steps from your boat.
  • September brings the warmest water and the emptiest piers of the whole season.

Tell us your date, group size and hotel — we will confirm a skipper, an exact price and your meeting point on the promenade, usually within minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Menaggio a good departure point if I am staying in Bellagio or Varenna?

Yes — but in that case book a tour departing from your own village, since skippers serve all three shores at the same price. Menaggio departures make most sense if you are based on the western shore or coming from Lugano.

Can the boat drop us in Bellagio after the tour?

On private tours of 2 hours or more, yes: many guests cruise one way and finish with lunch in Bellagio, then ferry back. Ask when booking and we will plan it in.

What is the best time of day from Menaggio?

Late afternoon into sunset. Menaggio faces east across the strait, so the low sun lights Bellagio and Varenna directly in front of you while the water goes calm.

Are there shared tours from Menaggio?

Shared options are fewer than in Bellagio; private boats are the norm here. For couples, the one-hour private tour split between two is often only €35–40 more than two shared tickets — with none of the crowds.
