Pasta Cooking Class on Lake Como — with a View

Three hours, two shapes of fresh pasta, one unbeatable view — then you sit down and eat everything you made, with local wine, where you made it.

Everyone eats well on Lake Como; very few people leave knowing how to recreate it. A cooking class here is the souvenir that keeps working: you learn fresh pasta the Lombard way, from chefs who learned it from their grandmothers, in kitchens with the lake framed in the window.

What the class is

A hands-on, three-hour class in a real kitchen — a chef's home above Bellagio, a cooking school in Varenna, a villa terrace near Como — for a maximum of eight guests. You start from flour and eggs and finish with two or three fresh shapes: tagliatelle or tagliolini, ravioli with seasonal fillings, and the local specialities you will not find in restaurants back home, like pizzoccheri-style buckwheat pasta or lake-fish ravioli. While the pasta rests you make a sauce and a simple dessert. Then the best part: everyone sits down together, the wine is opened, and lunch is whatever you just made — always the proof that you can, in fact, do this at home.

Where and when

Classes run in Bellagio (a chef's home in the hills above the town, with the lake below), Varenna (a cooking school steps from the harbour, easy from the ferry) and Como (a professional kitchen near the cathedral, ideal in any weather). Morning classes typically run 10:00–13:30 ending in lunch; some hosts offer an evening class ending in dinner. Unlike the boat tours, cooking classes run all year — they are our favourite answer to the question “what if it rains?”, and the single best November-to-March experience on the lake. In summer, book 1–2 weeks ahead; private classes for families and groups need a little more notice but can shape the whole menu around you.

Who it is for

Honestly? Almost everyone. Couples book it as a break from sightseeing; families because children who refuse restaurant food will devour pasta they made themselves; groups of friends because three hours of flour, wine and laughter is a better memory than another museum. And for non-cooks: the classes assume zero skill. The chefs' party trick is making people who “can't cook” produce restaurant-quality ravioli by lunchtime — they have never failed yet.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need any cooking experience?

None. The classes are designed for complete beginners, and the chefs are used to guests who have never touched a rolling pin. You will leave with pasta you are genuinely proud of — everyone does.

Can you handle dietary requirements?

Yes: vegetarian and vegan menus are easy, gluten-free doughs are available with notice, and allergies are taken seriously. Tell us everything when booking so the chef can plan the menu properly.

Is the class suitable for children?

Very — from about age 5 they can join the adult class with their own workstation, and there is a shorter kids' workshop alongside. Flour plus children plus lake view is a reliably excellent combination.

Do classes run in winter or in bad weather?

Yes — cooking classes run all year, indoors, which makes them the perfect plan B for a rainy day or a November trip when the boats are resting. Book ahead in summer; winter availability is usually easy.
