Seaplane Flight over Lake Como

Every other experience on this site shows you a piece of Lake Como. The seaplane shows you the thing itself: the whole upside-down Y, both branches, Bellagio hanging off the hinge, the Alps standing behind it all — in one continuous view that no pier, villa or Vespa can give you.

What the flight is

You board a small seaplane at the Aero Club Como hangars on the city's waterfront — the oldest seaplane operation in Europe and the largest seaplane school in the world — and take off directly from the lake. That moment alone, the hull lifting off the water as Como falls away beneath you, is worth the ticket. Then the pilot climbs along the first basin and the geography lesson of a lifetime begins: the city, Villa Olmo, Cernobbio and Villa d'Este shrinking to model size, then the lake opening into its famous inverted Y, villages you walked through yesterday now clearly just coloured dots on impossible green water.

Shared flights require a minimum of passengers and run on set days in season; private flights fly when you want, weather permitting.

What you see from above

The 15-minute circuit covers the Como basin: the walled city and its cathedral, Villa Olmo's gardens, Villa d'Este at Cernobbio, and the first stretch of villa coast. The 30-minute route is the one to book if you can: up the western shore past Laglio and Villa Oleandra, over Isola Comacina and the wooded finger of Villa del Balbianello, then the full sweep of the golden triangle — Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio — before the turn for home over the Tremezzina. On the extended flight the lake unrolls all the way north: Abbey of Piona, the wild upper basin, and on clear days the Bernina range wearing snow into June. Pilots narrate in English and happily bank for photographs.

Practical notes

• Meeting point: Aero Club Como hangars, Viale Masia — 10 minutes on foot from the city centre piers
• Flights are weather-dependent (visibility and wind on the water); morning slots are the calmest
• Weight and balance matter in small aircraft: you will be asked passengers' weights when booking — standard practice, no judgement
• Children welcome from about age 4; the headsets make everyone feel like a pilot
• Season: April–October, with the clearest air in May, June and September

How to combine it

The flight pairs perfectly with a water-level day: seaplane in the morning while the air is calm, lunch in Como, then a private boat tour in the afternoon to revisit from below the villas you saw from above. Guests consistently call that combination the best single day of their trip. Booking: shared seats need 1–2 weeks in high season; private flights can sometimes be arranged within 48 hours.
